Games technology students tackle violence prevention
Saturday 2nd May, 2015
Today (28th April) Somerset College students took up the challenge to develop a unique game that will tackle the issues and perceptions around violence.
The project was developed between Somerset College Computer Games Technology course students and Stand Against Violence. The game project aims to provide the students with the work experience which is required to complete their course, whilst also developing a game which is both fun and captivating, and through play enforces messages of non violence and community cohesion.
Adam Fouracre, founder of SAV started the project with a presentation to the computer games technology students where he set them the challenge of developing this game. Adam said ‘we are always trying to push the boundaries and do new and innovative things in our work to prevent violence. Last year we launched our 3D film and this year we hope to see the development of a computer game. In order to teach young people a valuable message in a way that it is retained we must attempt to match the stimulus that they experience in the world around them which includes advanced gaming graphics and film.’
The initial concepts are now being developed for the game and there is already some creative, innovative and impressive ideas emerging. The students will be aiming to complete their projects in June and Stand Against Violence will then be looking to promote the best game and evaluate its impact on positively changing violent attitudes.
