SAV Experiments with Virtual Reality

Thursday 10th March, 2016

VR teamCurrently we at SAV are experimenting with the new technology of Virtual Reality (VR). It wasn't long ago that we embarked on our 3D interactive film adventure. It was certainly challenging but well worth the wait.

Working with Yeovil College, Somerset College, and one of our sponsors Invirt Reality we have decided to embrace even newer and ever evolving technology. On first impressions the camera rig looks simple. Unlike with 3D where you need to constantly adjust the camera for movement and make sure you use specialist equipment a VR rig is essentially 6 cameras in a box. The challenge with VR film however is that the image distorts if a person gets too close, the camera cannot move freely within a space, and there is no where for the crew to hide behind between takes! All things that just don't need to be thought about with standard film.

VR filmingThe purpose of the film is to try and immerse the viewer in a scenario of erupting violence to make them aware of what these situations could feel like, how they are feeling and likely to react and how they need to react in real life to avoid harm. Whilst the project is an experiment to see if we can utilise VR in our work it does hold many promising glimpses in to what could be.

Currently we are in the sound mixing stage and we will update this blog with further news as it emerges. With much thanks to the media students at Yeovil College, Barry Ryerson at Somerset College, and Chris Jones and Mark Lewis from Invirt Reality.
